The story
Village policeman Horst Krause catches his sister Meta’s boyfriend, Rudi Weißglut, speeding during a visit to their quiet village. Rudi wants to marry Meta, who plans to move with him to Cologne, but Horst cannot bear the thought of being separated from her and his other sister, Elsa. Their dispute threatens the family’s traditional inn. Horst hopes Fine, the daughter of a local goose farmer, will take Meta’s place at the inn, but Fine has just finished school and wants to travel around the United States. With his sister’s wedding approaching and the inn’s future in doubt, Horst must confront the possibility that Meta will leave.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Village policeman Horst Krause is conducting a speed check when, of all people, Rudi Weißglut gets caught. Rudi is the boyfriend of Krause’s sister Meta, and his cheeky manner regularly drives Krause to despair. Weißglut, who lives in Cologne, is once again visiting the quiet village of Schönhorst. As soon as Rudi arrives, everything goes topsy-turvy. Rudi wants to marry Meta, and that’s not all: Meta wants to move to Cologne to be with him. Naturally, Krause considers this out of the question; he has never been apart from his sisters, Meta and Elsa. The siblings get into an argument, as a result of which Horst and Elsa even want to close the traditional inn. Krause’s last hope is Fine, the daughter of goose farmer Schlunzke. She is supposed to take Meta’s place at the inn, but just now, after finishing school, she wants to travel around the United States first. At the airport, she turns down Horst and her father, Schlunzke. The Krause inn now seems doomed, and Horst begins, reluctantly, to accept the wedding. Just as Meta and Rudi are exchanging their vows, Fine suddenly reappears. She has gotten cold feet and now wants to stay in Schönhorst after all. When Meta and Rudi realize that they have been swindled out of 3,000 euros by the boat company that was supposed to organize the wedding reception, and no boat turns up at the landing on the Havel, the celebration seems set to be a disaster. But Horst promptly redirects the entire wedding party to his farm, where they quickly set everything up and then drink, eat, sing, and dance. After a wonderful celebration, everyone is happy and content, and Elsa’s last attempt to stop her sister Meta from leaving fails. Finally, taxi driver Rudi and Meta set off for Cologne the next morning, and Fine takes Meta’s place at the Krause inn.
