mini|left|upright|Horst Krause (2012) The retired Paul Krüger, a former wrestler, is increasingly bothered in his hometown of Berlin by Muslim residents, who, in his view, are taking up more and more space. When a large Turkish family uses the pétanque court he shares with his two friends, Eckhardt and Bernd, as a barbecue area, the situation escalates and the retirees are injured. Shortly afterward, Krüger finds an invitation in his mailbox from his granddaughter Annie and her Turkish boyfriend Deniz to their wedding in Turkey. After talking things over with his daughter, Annie’s mother, he decides to travel to Turkey and talk Annie out of the wedding. He persuades Karin, his good friend and the owner of his regular pub, to accompany him. She is looking for a partner and urgently needs a vacation. Krüger and Karin arrive in Antalya soon afterward and, following a brief argument, take a double room at an all-inclusive hotel where Annie is also staying and where Deniz works as a bartender. In the elevator, Karin meets a Russian man named Dimitri and begins an affair with him. When Annie introduces her boyfriend Deniz to her grandfather, Krüger starts asking Deniz awkward questions until Annie angrily takes him aside and makes it clear that if he carries on like this, he can go home again. They part in an argument, and Krüger tries to find a German beer. In the process, he discovers the Bar Berlin, where he gets a beer and is approached by Murat, a Turk. He realizes it is a gay bar and beats a hasty retreat. The next day, Krüger, Karin, and Dimitri go on a bus tour of the local sights. During a stop at a Turkish bazaar, where the other tour participants stock up on carpets and other souvenirs, Krüger meets Omar, a young Syrian refugee who sets up a scale for tourists in exchange for money. Krüger gives him some money and his sunglasses. At a stop at an archaeological site, Krüger misses the bus back to the hotel and sets off on foot. Ahmed, who worked for an automobile company in Germany and speaks German, gives him a lift. At the bus stop, they realize that no more buses are going to Antalya. Ahmed invites Krüger to his home and, after a good dinner, offers him a bed beneath the stars. The next day, Krüger takes the bus back to Antalya and dreams about the wedding to come, in which Deniz turns around and looks like a stereotypical Islamist. Back in Antalya, Krüger runs into Omar again, and Omar offers to show him the way to the hotel. Unfortunately, he cannot find the way, and Krüger sends him off. As Krüger sets off on his own, two young men attack him. He throws one to the ground with a shoulder throw, but gives his money to the other, who threatens him with a knife. Omar drives the two men away with a slingshot. However, when Krüger calls the police, Omar hides, and Krüger only asks the officers for directions. Omar explains to Krüger that he is a refugee from Syria and has lost his parents. Krüger then decides to take the boy to the hotel and get him something to eat. At the hotel, he takes Omar to his room. On his way back from the buffet, he runs into Karin, who tells him she is going to travel to Saint Petersburg with Dimitri. Krüger leaves Omar in his room and goes to find Annie, whom he finds in tears. Deniz has called off the wedding because his great-uncle, the head of the family, does not approve. Krüger meets Deniz at the bar and offers to talk to the great-uncle, which Deniz initially dismisses as pointless. The next day, Krüger takes Omar to a children’s home for refugees and says goodbye to him. He then meets Annie, who is packing her things, and they decide to leave. Deniz tries to stop them and follows them to the airport, where customs holds Krüger up because of a bag full of souvenirs from Karin. Deniz asks him to speak to the great-uncle after all, and the two of them leave the airport together. They drive with Deniz’s cousin, whom Krüger immediately recognizes as Murat from the gay bar and who has business in Antalya, to Deniz’s great-uncle’s home in the countryside. The great-uncle still refuses to approve the marriage to the German woman, and he and Krüger retreat to his room to talk. They sit in silence for a long time, until the great-uncle suddenly looks at the clock in alarm and turns on the television to watch a wrestling championship. They comment on the match together, after which Krüger tells him about his big World Championship match at the championships in Sofia, where he wrestled and lost against the Turkish favorite of the time, Ali Rıza Alan. The great-uncle shows him a picture in a display cabinet bearing the wrestler’s autograph and then agrees to the wedding after all. The wedding takes place shortly afterward. Back in Germany, Krüger meets his German friends and Karin at their regular pub. Her affair with Dimitri has not worked out, and she is dejected. At home, Krüger finds a letter and a picture of himself in wrestling gear from Omar, who writes that he is learning German and hopes to visit him in Germany soon.
