A retired East German agent reunites his aging former team to rescue a kidnapped president-elect and a BND agent.

The story

Retired Main Administration A agent Jochen Falk is recruited by the Federal Intelligence Service after president-elect Kazan and BND agent Frank Kern are kidnapped in the fictional former Soviet republic of Katschekistan. Falk agrees to help, partly for personal reasons: Kern exposed him 30 years earlier. He insists on bringing back his old team—gadgeteer Jaecki, organizer Locke, and aging Romeo agent Harry—while BND agent Paula accompanies them as a minder. Arriving in Katschekistan, the former agents find that the world of espionage has changed and must rely on their accumulated skills to carry out the mission.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Jochen Falk, a former agent of the Main Administration A, is retired when he is recruited by the Federal Intelligence Service (BND). In one of the two (fictional) former Soviet republics of Katschekistan, which were supposed to be celebrating their reunification, president-elect Kazan and BND agent Frank Kern have been kidnapped. For personal reasons as well—not least because Kern was the one who exposed him 30 years ago—Falk agrees, but only on the condition that he can reactivate his old team. Alongside gadgeteer Jaecki, organizer Locke, and Harry, the no-longer-so-young Romeo agent, BND agent Paula also joins them as a minder. Once in Katschekistan, the aging agents realize that times have changed drastically and that they will have to rely on all their skills. They also have to resolve the question of whether Paula is Kern’s or Falk’s daughter (showdown on the Glienicke Bridge).
