Full plot (contains spoilers)
The three sisters Reyhan, Nurhan, and Havva live with their father, Şevket, in a remote village in the heart of Anatolia. One by one, he sends them to the city to work as maids. Each of them returns in failure. Havva, the youngest sister, had worked in the city as a housekeeper and nanny, caring for the young son of a wealthy family. She has to return to her father because her services are no longer needed after the child’s sudden death. Reyhan, the eldest sister, had returned earlier. She was pregnant and was hastily married to Veysel, a somewhat simple-minded shepherd. The young family lives with Şevket in his cramped farmhouse. Shortly after Havva’s return, Nurhan, the third sister, also comes back home. She had taken over her sister Reyhan’s job with the family of Dr. Necati, looking after the doctor’s son. Nurhan is said to have hit the boy because he wet the bed. Despite their failures in the city, the sisters dream of a better future. When Şevket invites Dr. Necati and the village headman to an outdoor summer rakı gathering, hoping at least to find Havva another position as a maid, Veysel joins them and asks Necati to help him and Reyhan find work. Necati hesitates at first, but grows angry at the talk of Veysel being considered mentally deficient. When an accident occurs as well, Veysel hides in the mountains, and the doctor no longer shows up at the family’s home. By now it is winter. The village is snowbound and the roads are impassable. In the farmhouse, Şevket and his daughters Reyhan, Nurhan, and Havva have grown close again and tell one another stories, as they used to.
