Full plot (contains spoilers)
In the autumn of 1952, France is trying to forget the scars of war. Seven-year-old Hélène and her nine-year-old brother Michel are suddenly separated from their parents. In the process of getting divorced, their parents decide to leave them with their maternal grandparents, who live in Lille. Between a somewhat authoritarian and rigid grandmother and a taciturn grandfather obsessed with the war and the Nazi genocide, Hélène tries to adjust to this new life. But soon, her Jewish identity is revealed to her, along with accounts of Nazi atrocities recounted by her grandfather and brother. Already emotionally fragile, the little girl gradually conflates the tragedy of History with her own existence.
