Full plot (contains spoilers)

In the Durance Valley, which is being redeveloped because of the construction of the Serre-Ponçon Dam, the death of a landowner makes his young daughter Hortense the sole heir to the 30 million francs paid in compensation for the expropriation of his land. The minor’s wealth arouses the greed of certain members of her family. They resort to every possible scheme, from seduction to violence, in an attempt to get their hands on her fortune. But Hortense, as freedom-loving as the Durance’s rushing waters, always slips through their fingers, ultimately finding peace with her beloved uncle, Simon the shepherd.
