The story
Five longtime friends gather for their customary winter stay at a hotel, where they are the only guests near the end of the season. Henri tells the others that he knows his wife, Apolline, is having an affair with Jean. Though he appears not especially upset, he demands that they end the relationship and not continue it.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The five old friends Henri, Apolline, Paul, Maxence, and Jean meet together every winter at a hotel, where they are now the only guests at the end of the season. When Henri announces that he knows about his wife Apolline’s affair with Jean, he does not seem overly upset about it. He only demands that they end their relationship and forget about continuing it. Shortly afterward, Jean, who had planned to leave with Apolline, is killed in an avalanche. The apparent accident increasingly comes under suspicion. Paul and Maxence grow ever more suspicious of Henri and find more and more clues pointing to him. Apolline is also certain that Henri had overheard their conversation in which Jean said he planned to leave with her. Paul and Maxence are convinced that Henri deliberately triggered the fatal avalanche. When Henri realizes that his friends are investigating him and that Apolline has also turned against him, he promptly takes his own life.
