The story
Fabrizio Colella, the only son of Mario, a mechanic and longtime widower, is caught up in an attempted kidnapping when he tries to protect his friend Antonio Filippini, the son of Engineer Filippini. The kidnappers seize Fabrizio instead and demand a ransom from Antonio’s father, who tries to delay while negotiating the amount down. When the criminals kill Fabrizio and release Antonio after the ransom is paid, Mario is left with grief and rage. He begins investigating on his own, setting out to pursue those responsible for the kidnapping.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Fabrizio Colella, the only son of Mario, a mechanic and a widower for many years, is kidnapped while trying to protect his friend Antonio Filippini, the son of Engineer Filippini, from an attempted abduction by three kidnappers. To force the engineer to pay the ransom—while he tries in vain to stall in order to negotiate the requested sum down as much as possible—the kidnappers kill Fabrizio. After receiving the ransom money, they release Antonio. Thus begins Mario’s personal struggle. Filled with rage and resentment, like a wounded animal, he conducts his own investigations and manages to eliminate everyone involved in the kidnapping, including the “above-suspicion” masterminds. After recovering the ransom money, he burns it. His revenge ends when Mario also kills Pardi, the man who carried out his son’s murder, as police sirens sound in the background. Mario’s fate is unknown, but it can be inferred that he is arrested.
