Still: Left. The Peugeot 301, the film’s star. A chronicle of life in a small village in Lorraine around 1935, seen through the lives of a married couple who are teachers and their son, Pierre. The story centers on the father’s purchase of a Peugeot 301, a remarkable event for the time. The teacher has reservations about being seen as a nouveau riche because of the purchase, but his brother, Uncle Henri, is more eccentric and encourages him to embrace modernity; the two of them practice driving it together. Growing more confident, the teacher decides to take his class on an educational outing in the car, but the trip does not go as planned and leads to a series of farcical episodes. Somewhat unsettled by all these events, Pierre fails his primary school leaving examination.
