A twelve-year-old astronomy enthusiast becomes fascinated by a disillusioned woman who works as a prostitute after their paths collide on a Paris street.
The story
Marie, a lively twelve-year-old who loves astronomy, is the daughter of separated parents. Her photojournalist father leaves for Brazil and asks his friend Pierre to look after her, while her busy mother, who runs a restaurant, sees her only occasionally. At school, Marie is close to Véronique, whose greater knowledge of sex intrigues both girls. Marie also watches the prostitutes who work along the service road opposite her apartment. When she crosses the street, one of them, Lilas, hits her with her car. Lilas is a beautiful but disillusioned woman whose life revolves around the street, Mme Yvette’s bar, and her dog Pierrot. After this unexpected meeting, Marie seeks Lilas’s company.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Marie, a lively girl of about twelve with a passion for astronomy, is the daughter of separated parents. Her father, a photojournalist sent to Brazil, leaves her alone in their apartment on Avenue Foch, entrusting her to his friend Pierre, while her mother, very busy with her restaurant, sees her only from time to time. Marie is very close to Véronique, a cheeky schoolmate who knows more about sex than she does—a subject that interests both girls. A keen observer, Marie takes an interest in the comings and goings of the prostitutes working along the service road opposite her building. As she crosses the street, she is hit by the car of one of them, Lilas, a beautiful, disillusioned woman who divides her time between the street, Mme Yvette’s bar, and her dog, Pierrot. After this abrupt first encounter, Marie seeks Lilas’s company.
