A provincial-town banker turns his attention from the women in his life to his prized car, only for a Romani woman to steal it.

The story

Hubert Durieux, a banker in a small provincial town, divides his limited leisure among his still-in-love ex-wife, his daughter, and his demanding mistress. Weary of their attention, he transfers his affection to his magnificent car. When a Romani woman steals it right under his nose, Hubert is exasperated and reports the theft to the police.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Hubert Durieux, a banker in a small provincial town, devotes what little leisure his profession allows him to his ex-wife Brigitte, who is still in love with him; his daughter Florence, whose confidant he is; and Elsa, his mistress, who gives him little respite. Tired of all the attention he receives, he transfers his affection to his magnificent car, which a ravishing young Romani woman steals right under his nose. Exasperated, he reports the theft to the police, who find the car and return it to him. The thief, whose name is Mona, has hidden in the back of the vehicle to evade the search. And now Hubert Durieux finds himself dealing with a fourth woman, who puts him through the wringer.
