Two rival groups of village children turn their annual quarrel into a button-stealing campaign.

The story

At the start of each school year, the children of Longeverne clash with those of neighboring Velrans. This time, Lebrac and his friends devise a new tactic: strip buttons and suspenders from their opponents so the children will be punished by their parents. The gang plans to fight without clothes and keep the captured buttons as trophies in a hut. Their escalating rivalry sets the stage for trouble involving the boys and their families.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

As every year, when the school year begins, the children of Longeverne quarrel with those of Velrans. This year will be different, since Lebrac (André Treton) and his friends plan to rip the buttons and suspenders off their enemies so their parents will give them a beating. They themselves will fight completely naked and keep the buttons torn from their enemies as trophies of war in a hut. At the end of the film, the Aztec des Gués’s father (Jacques Dufilho) finds his tractor wrecked after it has been used to destroy the hut. He sends his son to boarding school. Lebrac’s father (Jean Richard) makes a similar decision after his son runs away: the two ringleaders are sent to the same boarding school.
