In a crowded Ruhr tenement, a newly arrived couple is swept into their neighbors’ tangled sexual and financial schemes.

The story

Gerti and Uwe Möhnke move into a crowded tenement in the Ruhr, with Uwe’s brother Klaus helping them settle in. The building’s residents quickly draw the newcomers into their affairs: a neighbor makes an advance on Klaus, while Helmut Hagen proposes a sexual arrangement to the couple. Gerti turns him down, revealing that she is pregnant, and this rejection prompts Helmut’s wife Ilse to pursue Uwe instead. Elsewhere in the building, two siblings collect hush money from men visiting a prostitute, and the caretaker and pub regulars become entangled in schemes built around sex and money.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The story is set in a tenement building where the entire Ruhr working class seems to have gathered. Morally and sexually, things are completely out of hand—in short, it is Sodom and Gomorrah. The married couple Gerti and Uwe Möhnke move into their new apartment, with Uwe’s brother Klaus helping them. As soon as Klaus arrives, a nymphomaniac neighbor grabs him, supposedly only wanting to remove a stain from his trousers, and “persuades” him to have sex. A pubescent brother and sister have spotted a way to earn some extra money in the building. Whenever a man they do not know heads for apartment number 5, where a Turkish woman lives, they collect 5 DM in hush money, since the woman in number 5 works as a prostitute. Other residents of the building are Helmut and Ilse Hagen. Helmut introduces himself to the Möhnkes by suggesting they might try a swinging foursome sometime. Gerti turns him down, though: she is pregnant. This gives Ilse Hagen the idea that, since Gerti is unavailable, Uwe might like to sleep with her instead—which Helmut, in turn, dislikes. It is either the proposed foursome or nothing: “We fuck together.” When Helmut drinks far too much at Karl’s pub, the publican has to drag him home with difficulty. The caretaker, Erwin Kutter, joins them, and the three carry on drinking. The clumsy Helmut hits on the idea of offering his wife to the pub’s patrons as a “playground,” so he can make extra money from the sexual services Ilse is expected to provide. Before long, he joins in, but Ilse complains that his staying power leaves something to be desired. The ugly caretaker tries to get lucky in the apartment’s own toilet and, in the process, smashes the toilet bowl. At that moment, the young Hagen boy comes in and does not seem particularly surprised, except that he tells his father Kutter knocked over the toilet bowl. Of course, such a seedy part of the Ruhr also has its own red-light district. The man in charge is a pimp who pushes his prostitutes, including Lona, to ever greater feats, threats and all: “The good Lord and I see everything.” Meanwhile, the caretaker entertains his pub audience with tall tales from his time as a soldier in the Second World War. He tells them about his experiences with German girls at a Lebensborn home. Uwe, meanwhile, wants his pregnant wife Gerti to leave him in peace, and has picked up a certain Renate, whom he gives a ride home in his truck. She also lives in his tenement and is the caretaker Kutter’s niece. That does not stop Uwe from having sex with her after some back and forth. Since the sexually uninterested Gerti throws him out of their shared bedroom, Uwe thinks of the willing Ilse Hagen next door. After a beer to warm up, they get down to business. Helmut promptly shows up and catches the two of them having sex. Uwe makes himself scarce and tries his luck with another neighbor, whose husband is on the night shift. She is not as willing as Ilse at first, but eventually lets him have his way with her. “Your dick is bigger than my whole husband put together,” she sums up her opinion, and Uwe replies, “We could make two asses out of yours.” Meanwhile, the two blackmailing children have expanded their business. The little girl leads a client down to the cellar. There, he suggests that she give him a hand job. Her brother shows up “by pure chance.” It is the perfect opportunity to raise the blackmail price and leave the client unsatisfied and several bills poorer. Meanwhile, the pimp visits Lona to collect his money. He thinks she is cheating him, so Lona has to strip. The pimp checks every body opening and indeed finds DM notes of her earnings as a prostitute, “stashed away.” He beats Lona with his belt for trying to cheat him. When Uwe and Klaus Möhnke arrive, they intervene and beat up the pimp. Uwe takes a liking to Lona, whom he remembers from when he used to be a customer. In gratitude, she offers him a free session, but Klaus returns and tells Uwe that his wife Gerti has just suffered a miscarriage. Later, she will suggest to her unfaithful husband that they adopt little Thomas, whose mother Gisela, a prostitute, was once driven to suicide by the pimp (see part three of the series).
