A charming commedia dell’arte performer’s tangled romantic life is upended by the return of a marquis and his convent-educated goddaughter.

The story

Robert Lafleur leads a troupe of actors, winning over audiences with his performance as Scaramouche while regularly slipping away from the stage to visit his mistresses. Unbothered by rumors that he is the illegitimate child of a powerful lord, Robert divides his affections between Suzanne, who owns a tavern, and Madame de Popignan, herself involved with both the King and the Marquis de Latour. The return from Louisiana of the Marquis de Souchil, accompanied by his charming goddaughter, recently out of a convent, threatens to disrupt Robert’s already complicated romantic arrangements.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Robert Lafleur leads a troupe of actors in the finest commedia dell’arte tradition, and his performance as Scaramouche delights the crowds... whenever he isn’t leaving the stage to hurry from one mistress to another. Little troubled by the rumor that he is the illegitimate child of an important lord, he divides his time between Suzanne, the owner of a rather charming tavern, and Madame de Popignan, who is also the mistress of the King and the Marquis de Latour. The return from Louisiana of the Marquis de Souchil and his charming goddaughter, fresh from the convent, is about to change all that.
