A young man found unconscious on a Breton beach claims to come from another world, stirring speculation in a village about who—or what—he is.

The story

A priest in a village on the Breton coast discovers an unconscious young man on the beach. Examined by a doctor, the man is declared unharmed and in good health. When he regains consciousness, he cannot say what his name is, yet claims to come from another world without being able to specify exactly where. The priest takes him in and names him Jean, after the saint’s day on which he found him. Jean’s arrival stirs the village, whose residents’ beliefs and prejudices lead them to wonder whether he is an angel fallen from heaven, a lunatic, or an impostor.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

An unconscious, naked young man is discovered on a beach by the priest of a village on the Breton coast. Taken to the rectory and examined by the doctor, who declares him unharmed and in good health, the man regains consciousness, unable to say what his name is while claiming to come from another world, though he cannot specify exactly where from. The priest takes in the man, whom he names “Jean,” referring to the saint’s day on which he found him. Jean causes a stir in the village, according to its residents’ beliefs and prejudices: is he an angel fallen from heaven, a lunatic, or an impostor?
