The story
Ghiță, a shoemaker with a family and modest means, leaves his work repairing villagers’ boots and buys an inn with his wife, Ana. The establishment lies in an isolated spot near Arad, and they move there with their children and his mother-in-law. Hoping to make as much money as possible, Ghiță enters into partnership with Lică Sămădăul, a highway robber. This association becomes the central conflict, placing Ghiță’s pursuit of prosperity and his family’s wellbeing in jeopardy.

The shoemaker Ghiță, a family man with a little money to his name, gives up repairing the villagers’ boots and, together with his beautiful wife, Ana, buys an inn in a rather isolated spot near Arad. He moves there with their children and his mother-in-law. But his desire to make as much money as possible leads him to go into partnership with Lică Sămădăul, a highway robber. His association with Lică Sămădăul ultimately leads to his dehumanization and the destruction of him and his family.
