The story

During the fighting to liberate Paris, nurse Christiane Mercier and F.F.I. member Michel Fournier meet and fall in love. Christiane is expecting a child. Michel and Jacques Sénéchal, another fighter who is also in love with Christiane, have known each other since childhood, having grown up in the same Paris apartment building. Their backgrounds differ: Jacques comes from a bourgeois family, while Michel is the concierge’s son. As the war draws to a close, the relationships among Christiane, Michel, and Jacques are set against the upheaval of liberation and the uncertain future awaiting them.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Nine months pass between the Liberation of Paris and the end of the Second World War. It also takes nine months to bring a child into the world. Nurse Christiane Mercier (played by Géraldine Pailhas, who won the 1992 César Award for Most Promising Actress for this role) and F.F.I. member Michel Fournier (Matthieu Rozé) meet and fall in love during the fighting to liberate Paris. Christiane is expecting a child, who will be born in [year unspecified], but the child will never know their father, who enlists in the army and dies in early 1945. Jacques Sénéchal (Vincent Pérez), one of the child’s father’s fellow fighters, who was also in love with Christiane in [year unspecified], becomes a substitute father after the war. Before becoming fellow fighters, Jacques Sénéchal and Michel Fournier were childhood friends: they grew up in the same apartment building in Paris. Jacques came from a bourgeois family (whose father, having taken a stand in favor of collaboration, is soon executed), while Michel was the concierge’s son.
