After his son and his son’s partner die, a wealthy cabinetmaker searches for the surrogate carrying the child he hopes to raise as his grandchild.

The story

Joseph, a renowned and wealthy septuagenarian master cabinetmaker, loses his son Emmanuel and Emmanuel’s partner, Joachim, in a plane crash. He then learns that the couple had used a Belgian surrogate, Rita, to conceive a baby. Because the law forbids revealing the identity of non-parental biological parents, Joseph sets out to find the woman carrying the child, convinced the baby will otherwise be abandoned. He first seeks out Joachim’s parents, who may also be searching, but discovers they are unwilling to revisit memories of their son. Undeterred, Joseph continues his search and travels to Belgium, hoping to become a caring grandfather and adopt the child.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

After his son Emmanuel and his son’s gay partner, Joachim, die in a plane crash, Joseph (Fabrice Luchini), a renowned and wealthy septuagenarian master cabinetmaker, learns that the two men had used a Belgian surrogate, Rita (Mara Taquin), to conceive a baby. Since the law forbids disclosing the identity of the non-parental biological parents, Joseph sets out to find the woman carrying his future grandson or granddaughter, who is certain to be abandoned... He first looks for his son’s partner’s parents, who may be undertaking the same search as he is, and finds them. But rather than doing the same, they had a very hard time accepting their son’s homosexuality and have no wish to revive a memory they are trying to forget. Nevertheless, Joseph doggedly continues his search and goes to Belgium... Will he be able to prevent the baby from being abandoned at birth, when he feels ready to be a kind and caring grandfather, prepared to acknowledge and adopt the child?
