A young woman from an isolated Channel Island ventures to the mainland to find the onion seller she loves.
The story
Toward the end of the 19th century, Sarah is raised on a wild, isolated Channel Island. A childhood accident leaves her with a scar on her lip and a distorted voice, and she grows up coddled by her protective parents and a dreamy farmhand. Longing for Prince Charming, she meets Gaudion on her 19th birthday when the handsome onion seller washes up at her feet. They fall for each other, but Gaudion soon leaves to make his fortune. When he takes longer than promised to return, Sarah sets out for the mainland to search for him, finding work with a taxidermist who sells stuffed birds to wealthy collectors.
