A young Jehovah’s Witness falls in love with a former drug dealer and risks expulsion from her community rather than end the relationship.
The story
Giulia and her family are Jehovah’s Witnesses, whose strict rules forbid romantic relationships outside the community. While preaching, she meets Libero, a former drug dealer newly released from prison, and falls in love with him. After Giulia’s sister discovers them and informs their parents and the community, Giulia is told to end the relationship or risk expulsion. She decides not to give it up, leaving her relationship with Libero in conflict with the expectations of her religious community.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Giulia and her family are Jehovah’s Witnesses. Strict religious rules forbid romantic relationships with anyone outside the community. While preaching, she gets to know Libero, a former drug dealer who has just been released from prison, and falls in love with him. One evening, her sister discovers them and informs their parents, and then the community. Giulia is told to end the relationship or risk being expelled from the Witnesses, but she decides not to give up. Nearly disfellowshipped, Giulia moves in with Libero, but to survive they get involved in drug dealing, bringing further difficulties to their already complicated relationship. Their differences, however, lead them to take separate paths: Libero ends up in the hospital (and, perhaps, in Rebibbia), while Giulia seems determined to enroll at university.
