Full plot (contains spoilers)
Under the Guadeloupe sun, Lady M. walks into the sea, fully dressed and made up, covered in jewelry and wearing an elegant hat, arm in arm with a young beach attendant, Lambert. She decides that he will belong to her and her alone. Along with her longtime companion Pompilius, a former Romanian diplomat, she initiates him into their favorite pastime, the con, which he seems to have a natural talent for, having stolen her solitaire diamond. A Lyon industrialist, Mazurier, caught in the act of adultery, becomes the victim of their blackmail. When the old couple decides to return to their villa on the French Riviera, Lambert follows them, much to Pompilius’s dismay, as he does not take kindly to being supplanted by this young upstart. Lambert is to carry out their next big score: the theft of a tiara that Maharajah Boulipuram is to give his daughter at a lavish reception. Trusting him, Lady M. reveals the code to her safe (2017: the number of her lovers), names him her heir, and shows him photographs of herself in her youth.
