On the advice of his father, who is worried about his failing health, André Carel goes to rest in Évian, on the shores of Lake Geneva, a fashionable spa town for the well-to-do. His tutor, Gaston Lebeau (Michel Simon), is tasked with keeping him company and looking after him. During an excursion, André reaches the small village of Meillerie and watches the quarry workers at their work. He is captivated by the beauty of Reine Lugrin, the daughter of a modest boatman, whom he spots on a boat and falls under her spell. Pretending to be a worker and taking care not to reveal that he is rich, André Carel manages to get hired at the quarry. He is housed with the other workers in a house next to the young woman’s.
