Full plot (contains spoilers)

The musician Rudolf is a good-natured, hearty, sociable fellow with big, childlike eyes, and people enjoy playing jokes on him. When one of his friends, the writer Alfred, once takes things too far with him—a girl was involved—Rudolf, deeply hurt, retreats for a time into the solitude of his bachelor life. One day, Rudolf meets a poor match seller and takes pity on her. He brings her home, giving her shelter and food. In return, the girl looks after him and his house as his housekeeper, so that the recluse does not let himself go. Rudolf develops deep feelings for his ward. Things seem to be going well for him, especially when he makes up with Alfred, whom he had fallen out with. Alfred’s own girlfriend, Hanni, has just been unfaithful to him. Out of deep friendship, Rudolf sides with Alfred and makes it clear to Hanni just how much he thinks of her behavior toward his friend: not at all. At that very moment, Alfred has no qualms about betraying Rudolf with Rudolf’s new love, the match seller. All Rudolf is left with are the words of every clown: “Laugh, Pagliaccio! ... even when, in truth, you feel like crying.”
