A family's attempt to process the death of their daughter leads them into a series of unsettling and potentially supernatural encounters.
The story
After 16-year-old Alice Palmer drowns at a dam in Ararat, Australia, her parents, Russell and June, struggle to cope with the tragedy. The situation becomes increasingly unsettling as the family begins experiencing unexplained noises and what they believe to be Alice's ghost. As the family tries to find closure, they begin to uncover strange occurrences and evidence that suggests the boundary between the living and the dead is blurring. The film uses a pseudo-documentary style to explore the heavy emotional toll of grief and the haunting memories that linger after a loved one is lost.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Following the death of Alice Palmer, her parents Russell and June are haunted by her presence. Russell experiences a physical confrontation with an apparition, while June suffers from nightmares of Alice's corpse. Her brother, Mathew, finds 'ghostly' images in his photography, leading the family to seek an exhumation. During this time, Mathew installs cameras that capture images of Alice. They consult a psychic, Ray Kemeney, who cannot explain the phenomena. Later, it is revealed that Mathew fabricated some evidence to give June a chance to see the body and find closure. A hidden tape reveals a secret relationship between Alice and a neighbor, while a phone found at Lake Mungo contains footage of Alice encountering a disfigured version of herself. The film concludes with the family moving out, while evidence of Alice's presence remains in the house and in the final shots at the lake.
