A filmmaker’s death in a coastal town draws a captain into a decades-old shipwreck and a survivor’s lost memories.
The story
British filmmaker Owen Flemming returns to Dinard, where he spent his youth, to present his latest film at the British Film Festival. His body is found in the water beneath a pedestrian viaduct, and a medical examiner determines that he died during his fall rather than by drowning. Captain Élise Vignon investigates a case that appears connected to a shipwreck from 20 years earlier, in which Flemming’s teenage sister died. Vignon’s older sister was also aboard that boat and has since lived with amnesia that erased her memories of the wreck and the months before it.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
British filmmaker Owen Flemming, who spent his youth in Dinard, has returned to the town to present his latest film at the British Film Festival. His body is found in the water beneath a pedestrian viaduct: the medical examiner determines that he did not drown but died during his fall. Captain Élise Vignon is assigned to investigate a case that seems connected to a shipwreck 20 years earlier, in which Flemming’s sister, then a teenager, lost her life. It turns out that Captain Vignon’s older sister was also aboard the boat, along with the Flemmings and several other young people, and has suffered ever since from amnesia that erased all her memories of the shipwreck and the months leading up to it.
