The story

After FC Bayern Munich wins the 1932 German football championship under president Kurt Landauer, the story jumps fifteen years ahead. Landauer returns from exile in Switzerland to war-torn Munich, initially intending to continue on to New York. He attends a meeting of his former club, which is attempting to reorganize after clubs in the American occupation zone were forcibly dissolved. Without a license from the Allied occupiers to hold sporting events, the club faces an uncertain future. Its leaders unexpectedly reappoint Landauer as president. Though hesitant, he accepts and begins working with Sigi Hermann to repair the damaged stadium, while bookkeeper Inge Streicher discovers the club’s precarious finances.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The film begins with FC Bayern Munich, led by president Kurt Landauer, winning the 1932 German football championship in the final against Eintracht Frankfurt. Fifteen years later, Landauer returns from exile in Switzerland to war-torn Munich, intending to travel on from there to New York. He attends a meeting of his former club, which is trying to reorganize after all clubs in the American occupation zone were forcibly dissolved, but has not received a license from the Allied occupiers to hold sporting events. The club’s leadership, including Sigi Hermann and Conny Heidkamp, who guided the club through the war years, spontaneously reappoints Landauer as president. He accepts the election hesitantly and joins Hermann in beginning repairs to the war-damaged stadium on Grünwalder Straße. He hires bookkeeper Inge Streicher, who quickly realizes that the club is on the verge of financial ruin. To revive football in the city and save FC Bayern, Landauer negotiates with the leadership of local rivals TSV 1860 Munich to arrange the first football match. His parallel negotiations with the Americans are successful, and both clubs receive the required license to resume regular play. Landauer abandons his plans to emigrate to New York and remains president of FC Bayern until 1951.
