A group of deep-sea divers must race to rescue a teammate after a catastrophic equipment failure leaves him stranded underwater.
The story
Chris Lemons, Duncan Allcock, and David Yuasa are members of a team of saturation divers working to maintain undersea gas lines in the North Sea. They live in pressurized chambers on a vessel to endure the extreme depths. During a routine deployment, a malfunction in the ship's dynamic positioning system causes the vessel to drift away from the work site. This creates a critical emergency as the divers are left at depth, and the crew on the surface must find a way to stabilize the ship without causing an environmental catastrophe by striking nearby gas lines.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
While working on an undersea gas line, a ship's positioning system fails, causing it to drift. One diver, Lemons, becomes separated from his teammate, Yuasa, after his umbilical line snaps. Yuasa is pulled toward the ship, while Lemons is left alone with a limited oxygen supply. On the surface, the crew struggles to stabilize the ship while a remote vehicle locates Lemons, who is unconscious and suffering from oxygen deprivation. The crew eventually reboots the system and Yuasa manages to reach Lemons. Although Lemons' oxygen ran out 29 minutes prior, he is revived and eventually recovers fully. The film concludes with Lemons reuniting with his fiancée and the three divers returning to work three weeks later.
