Late Show (1999)

Conny Scheffer, program director of the Tele C network, is struggling with a ratings slump after the host of the Mick Meyer Show interviewed a disabled man who has sex with animals about his sex life with a goat. Scheffer hears radio presenter Hannes Engel on his car radio and immediately knows that he is the solution to his problem. But Hannes Engel has repeatedly preached to his girlfriend, Maria Keller, that television makes people “blind and stupid.” Maria has just quit her job as a series actress at Scheffer’s network because she was unwilling to undress for a scene at the request of Scheffer’s employee Carla Sperling, even though it made no sense. Still, with a Porsche as a gift and plenty of money, Scheffer manages to lure Hannes Engel away from his idyllic farm life. Mick Meyer is fired, Hannes Engel takes his place, and he is placated with deceitful promises. From an Alpine lodge, financier Dr. August Beer directs the business at Tele C. Also in the mix are lovesick taxi driver Rose, who adores Hannes Engel, and the sleazy tabloid reporter Tschurli Nowak, who was punched in the jaw by Hannes Engel after publishing a false and sensationalized story about Maria and is now bent on destroying the media star with a newspaper article.
