The story
After forty years away, Charles-Edmond Larmentiel returns to his hometown of La Rochelle intending to die there. Before his death, he reveals a family secret: he has a son named Émile, a fisherman, and wants to leave him his estate. Charles-Edmond’s younger brother, François, hopes to claim the inheritance to rescue the family’s powerful fishing business. He therefore sets out to win the favor of Émile, who is occupied with arguments with Fernande, a music-hall singer, and has no idea of the inheritance dispute about to involve him.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Charles-Edmond, the elder of the Larmentiel brothers, decides to return to La Rochelle, his hometown, to die there. Forty years earlier, his father had driven him away. Before passing away, the eccentric old man announces that he has a secret son, Émile, a fisherman, to whom he wishes to leave his estate. François, the younger brother, whom Charles-Edmond hates, has his eye on the inheritance to bail out the powerful family business, a veritable fishing trust, and will try to win the affection and property of this unwelcome heir for himself. Émile, for his part, is too busy arguing with Fernande, a music-hall singer, to suspect what awaits him...
