Marguerite Duras, Gérard Depardieu
A screenplay about a woman and a taciturn truck driver hovers between imagined story and passing reality.
The story
A writer reads an actor the screenplay for her next film. In the story within that reading, a truck driver picks up a woman. As they travel, she talks incessantly while he listens and barely speaks. Rather than showing these characters, the film offers numerous views of a Saviem semi-trailer crossing rural landscapes. The images connect the screenplay’s imagined journey to a tangible world, leaving its status somewhere between reality and epiphenomenon.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
A writer reads an actor the screenplay for her next film. It tells of a woman picked up by a truck driver. Throughout the journey, the woman talks incessantly, while the man listens and barely says a word. The film does not show the characters, but instead features numerous shots of a Saviem semi-trailer truck crossing various rural landscapes—images that vividly embody the expression (dating from the same period) “as handsome as a truck,” and whose effect is to push the screenplay into a blurry border zone somewhere between reality and epiphenomenon.
