Full plot (contains spoilers)
Sacha, a painter, is a greedy man in his thirties. He marries the very wealthy German countess Frieda Wromberg out of self-interest. But he soon grows tired of her. As soon as he returns from their honeymoon, he decides to leave the countess and get back together with his former Italian mistress, Manuella. On the way, they are involved in a car accident, and the young woman is burned to death. Sacha returns to his wife, but, unable to stand her jealousy and reproaches any longer, he strangles her and buries her in the garden. Since Manuella has neither family nor friends, Sacha gets the idea of making people believe that it was the countess who was burned to death. That way, he would collect the enormous inheritance. But then nothing goes as he had hoped.
