Le chanteur de Mexico (1956)

At the festival in Lesaca, a small village in the Spanish Basque Country, singer Vincent Etchebar performs with his loyal friend, trumpeter Bilou. The Parisian impresario Cartoni notices Vincent and wants to hire him. At the same time, tenor Miguel Morano refuses to go to Mexico with the female star Eva Marchal, for fear of running into Tornada, a fury to whom he once promised marriage. By the time Vincent and Bilou have made it to Paris, Cartoni is desperately searching for them. Vincent, Morano’s double, will replace the star in the title role of the operetta The Singer of Mexico, unaware that a real Miguel Morano exists. But the two friends remain nowhere to be found. They have become house painters on the Eiffel Tower and live in the same building as Cricri, a lively young woman. Thanks to a radio contest he entered at Cricri’s insistence, Cartoni hears him and summons him. Vincent is hired and introduced to his leading lady. Eva falls for him and has him rehearse privately at her home. As for Vincent, his heart is torn between her and Cricri. The company sets off for Mexico. As soon as he arrives in Acapulco, Vincent, using the pseudonym Miguel Morano, is spotted by Tornada, who manages to have him kidnapped. But Bilou, Cricri, and Cartoni arrive in time to explain the mistake. As Cricri and Vincent confess their love for each other, and Bilou tries to comfort Tornada, the tour ends in the capital, Mexico City.
