A street-level portrait of Parisians in May 1962 asks what people think and do as the Algerian War draws to a close.
The story
In May 1962, as the Algerian War draws to a close with the Évian Accords, a camera moves through Paris at street level and among the faces of its residents. The film asks what Parisians are doing and thinking during what it describes as the first month of peace in seven years. Politics and the war might seem natural subjects for conversation, yet people avoid discussing them. An interviewer is surprised by this apparent silence, wondering whether the French, known for their love of debate, have fallen quiet.

A month in a city: Paris in May 1962, filmed up close at street level and among the faces by Chris Marker and his team. “In this first month of peace in seven years”—as the Algerian War draws to a close with the Évian Accords—what are Parisians doing, and what are they thinking about? The war and politics? People avoid talking about them, and the interviewer is even surprised: could the French, who loved to debate so much, have fallen silent?
