The story begins in the 1930s: Bajou, a chubby young Tunisian Jew, becomes an employee of Monsieur Scali, a wealthy landowner. The film follows Bajou’s rise in social standing: he becomes Monsieur Scali’s accountant before going into business for himself and becoming a formidable businessman. Having grown rich during the Second World War, Bajou decides to marry Habiba, the daughter of his former employer, who is now ruined.
