The story
A police commissioner’s murder investigation unsettles the nightly bridge game of four men at a port-side bar.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The oaf is both the all-purpose helper at this bar, on the quays of a port and wedged between warehouses, and the bar’s landlady’s lover. Four men—a journalist, a doctor, a shopkeeper, and a professor—meet there to play bridge every evening. One evening, a police commissioner arrives to investigate the murder of a traveling salesman.
