Full plot (contains spoilers)
Mathieu and Émilie Ricoeur lead a peaceful life with their young son, Arthur. But one day, Émilie is struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver outside her parents’ house. Horrified by what he has done, the driver flees and takes his own life the following night, but not before telling his older sister, Luisa Castelli, why he did it. Two years later, Émilie’s coworkers hold a small memorial ceremony in her honor. Luisa, consumed by family guilt and the only person who knows the truth about the accident, attends, as does Mathieu Ricoeur. They quickly fall in love and decide to build a life together, especially since Arthur takes to Luisa instantly—a far cry from the reactions of the rest of Mathieu’s family and Émilie’s family. Despite this, Luisa settles into her new life, doting on Arthur, whom she considers her own son. But she cannot bring herself to reveal her terrible secret and tell Mathieu that she is the sister of the man who killed his wife. During a party at his school, young Arthur suddenly disappears. The police investigation is assigned to Commander Sophie Colbert, who suspects Luisa of arranging a kidnapping. Luisa soon finds herself alone and having to defend herself, all the more so because, under the pressure of events, she has had to tell Mathieu the truth about her brother’s involvement in Émilie’s death, plunging the couple into a deep crisis. After learning the facts, Commander Sophie Colbert orders an examination of Luisa’s brother’s car, which Luisa had kept hidden in a garage ever since the accident. The examination will cast doubt on the official circumstances of Émilie’s death and take the investigation into Arthur’s disappearance in a completely different direction.
