A grave-robbing affair in a fictional harbor town draws Gabriel Lecouvreur into a succession of eccentric local portraits.
The story
Gabriel Lecouvreur becomes entangled in a murky grave-robbing affair in the fictional harbor town of Angernaud, after young grave robbers are murdered there. The plot provides a framework for a series of portraits of the town’s inhabitants, including political activists, crooked politicians, cross-dressers, alcoholics, a depressed bisexual hairdresser, thugs, and café patrons. The portraits present a world described as sometimes sordid, yet also poetic and often realistic.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Gabriel Lecouvreur gets caught up in a murky grave-robbing affair after the young grave robbers are murdered in the harbor of the fictional town of Angernaud. The film is made up of a succession of portraits, each more caricatured than the last, attached to a plot that serves merely as a pretext. These portraits depict a reality that is sometimes sordid, always imbued with poetry, and often realistic. We encounter far-right (or left-wing) activists, crooked politicians, cross-dressers, alcoholics, a depressed bisexual hairdresser played by Clotilde Courau, one-dimensional thugs, a café owner, inspired patrons, and so on.
