The story
In her twenties and from a bourgeois background, a young woman feels that her life is deeply inadequate and pointless. Longing for greater intensity, she wants to bring some light and lightness into her existence. She decides to give her love not to a man she considers especially attractive, deserving, or admirable, but to the first man who comes along—because, in her view, those other men do not need her.
