The story
In 1918, Captain Alfred de Morsac arrives by military ship at Fenua Poerava, an imaginary island in the Polynesian archipelago. Decorated with the Croix de Guerre, he intends to form a battalion of Oceanian riflemen to reinforce the troops at Verdun. The island’s Hiva inhabitants live under the control of the greedy Commander Lefebvre and soon drive the French officer away. Barnabé, a swindler with a tender heart, accompanies Morsac. During his brief stay, Morsac befriends Reia, a child and prince of the island, who believes the captain can liberate his people. Reia’s mother, Moeata, remains wary of the newcomer.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
In 1918, Captain Alfred de Morsac (Thierry Lhermitte) lands his military ship on an imaginary island called Fenua Poerava (“island of the black pearl” in Tahitian), a lost paradise in the Polynesian archipelago. He has been awarded the Croix de Guerre and has come to form a battalion of Oceanian riflemen to reinforce the troops at Verdun. But the inhabitants, the Hiva, under the thumb of the vile and greedy Commander Lefebvre, soon drive the French officer away. Barnabé, a swindler with a tender heart, goes with him. Morsac has nevertheless befriended a child, Reia, the island’s prince. Reia sees him as the liberator of his people. However, Reia’s mother, Moeata, a Frenchwoman by birth who lives in a Polynesian dress and goes barefoot, is wary of this Morsac.
