After being dumped by her boyfriend Warner Huntington III, who believes she isn't serious enough for his political ambitions, Elle Woods enrolls at Harvard Law School to win him back. During her first semester, she faces prejudice from classmates who view her as a superficial blonde. She eventually befriends a local manicurist, Paulette, and learns that Warner is engaged to his former girlfriend, Vivian. During a high-profile case involving fitness instructor Brooke Windham, Elle is hired as an intern. She eventually uncovers a crucial piece of evidence regarding a murder and helps exonerate Brooke. After the trial, Elle realizes Warner is a 'complete bonehead' and rejects his offer to resume their relationship. She becomes best friends with Vivian, and the film concludes with Elle giving a successful graduation speech while her peers move forward with their careers.
