Full plot (contains spoilers)
Colonel William Ludlow, seeking refuge from government betrayals, establishes a ranch in Montana with his three sons: Alfred, Tristan, and Samuel. The family's peace is disrupted by the harsh environment and the onset of World War I. In 1914, both Alfred and Samuel join the war, while Tristan joins to protect Samuel. During the conflict, Samuel is killed in a reconnaissance mission; Tristan, consumed by grief, becomes a brutal soldier and is eventually discharged. Back in Montana, Tristan becomes involved in the prohibition-era rum-running and falls in love with Isabel Two, who is tragically killed. Following a series of tragedies, including the suicide of Susannah and a violent confrontation with the O'Banion brothers, the family is fractured but eventually finds a somber resolution. Tristan survives as the last of the family, living into the 1960s, where he eventually faces a final confrontation with a grizzly bear.
