A portrait commission draws Leibniz into debates about art, truth, identity and the soul.
The story
Prussian Queen Sophia Charlotte commissions a portrait of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, a philosopher she deeply respects and who serves her mother in Hanover as a landscape gardener and court thinker. Court painter Pierre-Albert Delalandre arrives with nearly completed canvases, planning to add Leibniz’s face on the spot. The painter’s artistic ideas prompt Leibniz to debate the relationship between images and their models, and the representation of truth and identity. After Delalandre leaves, the disguised young Flemish artist Althie Van De Meer arrives in Hanover. She seeks to express inner life rather than outward appearance, and her portrait sittings with Leibniz lead to conversations about art, love and truth.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Prussian Queen Sophia Charlotte commissions a portrait of the philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, whom she deeply respects. He serves her mother in Hanover as a landscape gardener and court thinker. Court painter Pierre-Albert Delalandre arrives with canvases that are almost finished, intending only to add the face on the spot, since, in his artistic conception, it fits the painting. Leibniz begins a discussion about images and their models, the question of truth and its artistic representation, individuality, and identity. Frustrated by these conversations, Delalandre flees. Soon afterward, the fictional young Flemish artist Althie Van De Meer arrives in Hanover disguised as a man. She represents a different artistic approach: she is concerned not with depicting the outward appearance, but with expressing the inner soul on canvas. During the sittings that follow, conversations about art, love, and truth develop between Leibniz and the young artist.
