A newly married woman’s work at a nudist hotel puts her attraction to a visitor at odds with her husband’s traditional expectations.
The story
Young Jaglika marries Luka, a traditional-minded man, and they move from their Montenegrin hinterland village to the seaside. There, the formerly buttoned-up and chaste Jaglika takes a job as a chambermaid at a nudist hotel. She is captivated by the sight of a naked Englishman, and her experience there begins to challenge the expectations of her marriage. Luka is deeply displeased by her response, bringing their differing outlooks into conflict. In the hinterland village they left, strict tradition shapes what Luka expects of marriage and a wife’s fidelity.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Young Jaglika marries a traditional-minded man. In the Yugoslav hinterland of Montenegro, custom dictates that when a husband mounts his wife, he lays a cloth over her face. And if his wife is unfaithful, he takes her up a mountain and smashes her skull with a heavy hammer so that she will never sin again. Now Jaglika and her husband Luka move to the seaside. When Jaglika, buttoned-up and chaste, works as a chambermaid in a nudist hotel, she is so taken with the sight of a naked Englishman that she comes to enjoy the “beauty of sin” too, and soon has group sex. Her husband is not at all pleased. They return to their backward village, and Luka now has to kill Jaglika. But he too has changed during his time on the coast.
