Full plot (contains spoilers)
A garage mechanic is repairing a car at night when the gendarmerie calls him to the scene of a fatal road accident. He then returns to finish the repair, but unfortunately the car has been taken away in his absence, leaving it dangerous to drive. He was supposed to take part in a cycling race, but, tormented by remorse, he gives up the sporting event and stops listening to his loved ones, who urge him to say nothing about the mistake that could prove fatal to the car’s occupants: the German customers have taken their car back without his knowledge, with a steering nut not properly tightened. Aided only by the village priest and two employees of the postal and telecommunications service, he tries to find the motorists in danger. The village gendarmes are uncooperative.
