Four idle friends in a working-class Brussels neighborhood embrace a shared identity that begins to conflict with their ambitions and everyday realities.
The story
Four friends spend their days in the streets of Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, a working-class neighborhood in western Brussels. Unemployment and petty scams shape their daily lives, while disillusioned older residents look on and Malika, a celebrated television journalist who grew up in the neighborhood, provides another local presence. Feeling they lack a strong identity, the friends invent one for themselves: they call themselves the Barons, proudly embrace idleness, and resolve to enjoy life’s bright side. Their chosen self-image soon comes into tension with their professional and romantic ambitions, as well as the realities surrounding them.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Four friends while away their boredom in the streets of Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, a working-class neighborhood in western Brussels. Their daily lives revolve around unemployment and petty scams, watched over by their disillusioned elders, nearing the end of a life spent working, and by the beautiful Malika, a star television journalist who grew up in the neighborhood. Lacking a strong identity, they create one of their own: they are the Barons, proudly claiming their idleness and choosing to enjoy the bright side of life. But this identity clashes with each of their professional or romantic ambitions—and even with the realities of life.
