The story

Odile Langlois is hired to teach a fourth-grade class at an elementary school run by Henri Lebel. The children are initially delighted by their new teacher. During a lesson on Arthur Rimbaud’s poem “The Sleeper in the Valley,” Odile asks the pupils to illustrate the poem’s final line, which refers to two red holes in a figure’s side. One pupil pricks himself with a needle to make the illustration more realistic. When Richard’s father, Philippe Lanosel, discovers the resulting stains in his son’s blue notebook, he immediately complains to the principal.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Odile Langlois is hired to teach a fourth-grade class at an elementary school run by Henri Lebel. The children are initially delighted by the arrival of their new teacher. One day, she asks the pupils to recite and illustrate Arthur Rimbaud’s poem “The Sleeper in the Valley.” During the lesson, the teacher wants to draw the pupils’ attention to the poem’s final line: “He has two red holes in his right side.” She then asks them to represent the two bloodstains with two small red dots. To make the picture more realistic, one pupil pricks himself with a needle to draw blood. But when Philippe Lanosel, little Richard’s father, discovers that the stains have appeared in his son’s blue notebook, he immediately complains to the principal. Over the course of her adventures, Odile Langlois meets Jean Castéli, the school’s union representative, played by Tom Novembre.
