Full plot (contains spoilers)
In 1702, following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, the Protestant people of the Cévennes, mostly peasants and silk workers, form armed groups under the leadership of Gédéon Laporte and fight the dragoons of Louis XIV, who are charged with imposing Catholicism on the entire population. Hunted by Captain Poul, they wage a guerrilla war, harassing the royal troops, burning Catholic churches, and gathering for secret religious meetings. Abraham Mazel, a young preacher, fires them up with his apocalyptic sermons. The resistance groups grow, notably under Cavalier’s leadership, despite their weakness and losses among their ranks. Just when Poul thinks he has defeated them, the resistance reorganizes under the name of the Camisards.
