The story

In 1787, Jean-François de La Plaine is exiled after killing a friend of King Louis XVI in a duel and appointed governor of Cape Saint-Louis, a small African trading post. A freethinker, he accepts his new circumstances and tries to relieve his loneliness by playing the spinet. As revolution begins in France, La Plaine encounters the varied realities of Africa and slavery. His life at the outpost also brings him into contact with Amélie, a young Fulani girl who is enslaved and given to him.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

It is 1787. Because he has killed a friend of King Louis XVI in a duel, Jean-François de La Plaine is exiled to Cape Saint-Louis, a tiny African trading post where he is appointed governor. A freethinker by nature, he resigns himself to his fate, trying to ease his loneliness with his spinet (a keyboard instrument in the harpsichord family). Far away in France, the Revolution breaks out, while he discovers the many facets of Africa and slavery, the love of the young Amélie (a young Fulani enslaved girl who has been given to him), and the richness of difference.
