The story

Gaspard Caveilhac, a famous Parisian writer, is dissatisfied with his private life, divided between his mistress Marie and alimony payments to his ex-wives. He retreats for a few days to the home of his brother Paul, a modest French teacher in a small town in Brittany. Gaspard is drawn to the tranquility of Paul’s life, while Paul envies his older brother’s easy fame. Gaspard proposes that they legally exchange lives before a notary, including their respective partners in the contract. At first, the arrangement appears to work: Gaspard and Paul’s wife Isabelle, already Gaspard’s mistress, get along. Paul, however, is terribly intimidated by Marie.
