The story
The wealthy widow Araminte hires Dorante, a young, gallant man, as her secretary. He is secretly in love with her, and his former servant Dubois, who also works for Araminte, has a plan to make her fall in love with Dorante. Meanwhile, Araminte’s mother pressures her to marry Count Dorimont so that a legal dispute over a piece of land can be settled. Araminte refuses the proposed marriage.

The wealthy widow Araminte hires the young, gallant Dorante as her secretary. Dorante is secretly in love with her, and his former servant Dubois, who now also works for Araminte, has a plan to make Araminte fall in love with Dorante too. However, Araminte is pressured by her mother to marry Count Dorimont so that a legal dispute between them over a piece of land can be settled. Araminte refuses. When she learns of Dorante’s love, she feels sorry for him but keeps him on as her secretary anyway. After various complications involving, among other things, a portrait of Araminte and an intercepted letter, the two are finally able to confess their love to each other.
